Where a specification calls for a capacitance, resistance or diameter figure on the 16 AWG or 18 AWG items, request the datasheet rather than interpolating from the 14 AWG values.
Selecting a Gauge and Pair Count
Gauge selection on control circuits is a volt-drop and load question, not a signal-quality question. An 18 AWG pair is normally sufficient for dry-contact inputs, sensor returns and low-current digital I/O over moderate distances. Move to 16 AWG where the run is longer or the loop holds a relay coil, and to 14 AWG for sustained loads or long runs between panels, where the published 8.2 Ω/km gives the most headroom. Two-pair versions cut installed cable count where a device needs both a power feed and a signal pair, but a single physical failure then affects two circuits, so keep independent or redundant functions on separate cables.
Screen Termination Practice
The aluminum foil screen only works if it is terminated. Bond it at the control panel or cabinet end only, keep the drain wire continuous through every junction box, and isolate the screen from enclosures and conduit at the field end so no ground loop is formed. The screen is never a circuit conductor or an equipment grounding conductor. Physical separation from power feeders, drives and busways remains the primary noise control measure, with the screen as a supplement. These Cables Are Not Fire-Rated
This range uses HDPE insulation and a PVC jacket, and the listings do not cite any circuit-integrity or fire-performance standard such as IEC 60331, EN 50200 or BS 6387. Do not substitute a control cable into a fire alarm, voice evacuation, emergency lighting or smoke-control circuit. The 16 AWG and 18 AWG listings state stranded bare copper and solid bare copper; the 14 AWG listing states tinned copper. Confirm the construction on the datasheet for the part number, since stranding affects flex life and termination.
