Copper Connectivity at a Glance

The copper hardware is built around 19-inch rack-mount termination and RJ45 cordage. The patch panel is available as a 24-port 1U unit (HEAP60U124) and a 48-port 2U unit (HEAP60U248), both CAT6 unshielded, with a black powder-coated steel frame, IDC phosphor bronze contacts, 50µm gold-plated RJ45 pins and T568A/T568B wiring, compliant with ANSI/TIA 568-C.2 and ISO/IEC 11801 Class E.

Patch cords span four performance grades. CAT5E and CAT6 are specified for 1000 Base-T; CAT6A and CAT7A are specified for 10 Gigabit, 10G Base-T. Fiber Connectivity at a Glance

Specifying Accessories with the Cable

Connecting hardware should be selected at the same time as the cable, not after it. Three points are worth settling early in a project.

First, performance grade has to be consistent end to end. A channel is rated by its weakest component, so pairing a high-category cable with lower-category cords or panels produces a link that tests to the lower grade. Second, screening has to be consistent. A screened cable terminated on unscreened hardware loses the continuous shield path that made it worth specifying; if the horizontal cable is screened, the panel and cords need to carry the screen through. Third, jacket rating has to match the space. Plenum, riser and LSZH requirements are set by the building and by local code, and cords sit in the same air-handling spaces as the permanent link.

Panel density and rack space also need planning. A 24-port 1U panel and a 48-port 2U panel occupy the same rack height per port, but the higher-density unit concentrates more cordage in one place, which raises the value of the rear cable management and front labeling that come with these panels.
